Entrepreneurial innovation holds the key to unlock the rise of technology, a strategic solution to the most pressing issue to the environment, affecting an attitudinal shift in people and the economy. Entrepreneurship, however can only thrive in a vibrant ecosystem that actively supports and nurtures the innovation.
United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT), with the support of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), have joined forces to launch Global Cleantech Innovation Programme in developing countries and emerging economies, powered by the Cleantech Open’s proven accelerator model from Silicon Valley.
This programme is focused on enhancing the local entrepreneurial ecosystem and policy framework. A competition-based approach is used to identify the most promising entrepreneurs across a country, whilst local acceleration programme supports, promotes and “de-risks” the participating companies and connects them to potential investors, customers and partners. The best cleantech startups progress through the Cleantech Platform, they are continuously trained, mentored and assessed.
Supporting the development of strong innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystems around the world at a local, city, state and regional level. GCIP will not only identify the most promising entrepreneurs in participating countries but will unite a diverse range of local partners for the single goal of accelerating and supporting the very best cleantech ventures.
Our vision is a global programme that enables an entrepreneur in Kuala Lumpur or Hyderabad to receive mentoring from an expert in Johannesburg or Istanbul, license their technology to a partner in New Delhi, Sao Paulo or Shanghai and secure venture funding from Silicon Valley, Moscow or London.
A growing list of countries is now engaged in the Global Cleantech Innovation Programme (GCIP). Malaysia is joined by South Africa, Armenia, India, Turkey, Pakistan and Thailand who recently confirmed the launch the similar platform. The diversity of applicants across these countries and regions will create a strong foundation for regional collaboration, South-South technology transfer, and expansion. It is expected that all GEF countries will benefit directly and indirectly from the support given to entrepreneurship and clean technology innovation.
